Presence
The acclaimed director tests his directorial skills through this nifty paranormal narrative captured wholly from the viewpoint of the phantom. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the lens – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of aware of the supernatural presence, and it seems guarding her. But why? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation you might not see coming. This Creepy Thriller
Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller stands strong even without a sequel. Set in the late 70s in Denver, a series of child abductions has made the youth on edge. When Finney is taken by the villain and imprisoned in a dungeon, he fears the worst. However, the disconnected phone on the wall repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators offering help, while the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister could save him. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, the Film4 channel
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for Mammon in this director's wonderfully garish true story of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Garfield plays the venal Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals set about capitalizing on the American public's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, yet Chastain manages to show the character in a likable light. Next Tuesday, early morning, on Film4
